2022: PDP NEC Divided Over Call For Ayu’s Removal
The call for the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Iyorchia Ayu to resign from office has divided the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
The division among members of the council is coming ahead of their meeting scheduled for Thursday in Abuja.
The camp of the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike had called for Ayu’s resignation as part of their demands to support the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
However, the camp of the presidential candidate has insisted that Ayu must remain in office, adding that he was elected to serve for four years.
The party’s national chairman has also insisted on remaining in office till his tenure ends.
He further stated that he would not allow people calling for his resignation to destroy the party.
Meanwhile, the Publicity Secretary of the PDP in Oyo State, Akeem Olatunji, in an interview with Punch claimed that Ayu’s resignation from office would facilitate Atiku’s electoral victory.
He further stated that the state chapter of the party is not against Atiku and Ayu but after the party’s victory in 2023.
The Rivers State PDP Chairman, Desmond Akawor while speaking on the crisis in the party insisted that Ayu must go having vowed to resign if the presidential candidate of the party emerge from the north.
The acting chairman of the party in Osun State, Akindele Adekunle, however, said Ayu should not be forced to resign now as the election is close.
He pleaded that Ayu should be allowed to remain until after the 2023 general elections.
The Ebonyi State Chairman of the PDP, Okoroafor Okorie called on Ayu to resign from office if the sacrifice would bring peace to the party.
