Exciting developments are on the horizon for the sport of fencing, as the 2024 Men’s Junior Epee Fencing World Cup prepares to take place from 14 to 15 December in Lagos, Nigeria.
The Men’s Junior Epee Fencing World Cup will feature top fencing nations, including the United States, Hong Kong, and Egypt, among others.
Charterhouse Lagos, a renowned international school in Nigeria, has been selected as the host venue, marking a significant milestone as Nigeria becomes the first Sub-Saharan African country to host a fencing World Cup.
This opportunity not only highlights Nigeria’s growing prominence in the international sports arena but also underscores the potential for the development of fencing across the continent.
Confirmed participants for this two-day championship include Ghana, Senegal, Greece, Angola, Togo, and the Benin Republic, alongside the host nation, Nigeria.
President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel, expressed his gratitude for this opportunity and emphasized its importance for the country’s recognition on the global stage.
“We are thrilled that Nigeria has been chosen to host this significant event. Our partnership with Charterhouse Lagos is invaluable, and we appreciate their support. Hosting the World Cup is a remarkable opportunity for any country in Africa, and we are proud to be the first in Sub-Saharan Africa to do so,” Samuel remarked during a press conference at the Lagos Fencing Club.
Having successfully hosted the African Championships in 2018 and 2020, Nigeria is keen to demonstrate its ability to organise high-calibre events.
The upcoming World Cup will not only showcase local talent but also provide Nigerian fencers with a chance to compete at an elite level, earning crucial points for future qualifiers, including those for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
