Two Akwa Ibom Commissioners Resign, State Reasons

Ahead of the 2023 governorship election in Akwa Ibom, two commissioners in the state have resigned their appointments immediately.

Naija News learned that the two commissioners resigned their appointments on Monday to contest in the upcoming governorship election in the state as provided by the Electoral Act 2022.

The two commissioners who left their posts are that of Labour and Manpower Development, Sunny Ibuot and Economic Development and Ibom Deep Sea Port, Akan Okon.

In his resignation letter, Ibuot said his decision to leave the state cabinet was necessary in order for him to focus on his governorship aspiration.

He, however, appreciated the state governor, Udom Emmanuel for giving him the opportunity to serve actively in various capacities.

He said ”It has been a tremendous honour to have been appointed. First as Secretary, Technical Committee on Agriculture and Food Sufficiency. Later Hon. Special Adviser, Political/ Legislative Affairs and Water Resources and finally Hon Commissioner in Akwa Ibom State Executive Council of your administration.

“While this duration lasted, I have endeavoured and actively served with the best of my ability and potential, with milestones on the sands of time.”

In his own letter, Okon said his decision to resign was in order to focus on his aspiration for the 2023 governorship election and to emerge as the new governor of the state.

The former commissioner thanked God and the governor for the honour and great privilege to serve the state to the best of his ability.

He said: “It is my deep conviction that this is the best time to take a leave in order to focus on my aspiration for the 2023 Governorship election.

“I also thank the good people of our dear state for their support and encouragement which motivated me in the discharge of all the tasks and assignments given to me, especially with regards to the envisioned three gateways (Land, Air and Sea) for the rapid development of our dear state and creation of job opportunities for our teeming and very enterprising youths.

The former commissioner said he strived diligently to interpret Governor Emmanuel’s vision for the oil-rich state.

As the scripture admonishes, ‘to everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven…” Eccl. 3: It is my deep conviction that this is the best time to take a leave in order to focus on my aspiration for the 2023 Governorship election,” he said.

The two politicians are joining other aspirants like Senator Bassey Albert, and Onofiok Luke, a House of Representatives member, who had already declared their governorship aspirations.
