Minister of Works, David Umahi, has reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to overhauling Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure, underscoring the importance of pivotal road projects to national progress.
In a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media, Orji Uchenna Orji, Umahi highlighted that the President’s forward-thinking approach to governance has led to the launch of four groundbreaking legacy road projects, all designed to foster stronger connections across key economic, agricultural, and industrial zones in Nigeria.
These major initiatives include the 750 km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the 1,068 km Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, the 482 km Calabar-Abuja Superhighway, and the 439 km Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe Highway.
Orji, speaking on behalf of Umahi, noted that these developments represent significant milestones for infrastructure not just in Nigeria but across the African continent.
Among them, the Calabar-Abuja Superhighway stands out as a monumental step in enhancing national connectivity and driving economic integration.
“The Calabar-Ebonyi-Benue-Kogi-Nasarawa-Abuja Superhighway begins from the spur of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway in Cross River State, traverses Enugu, Abakaliki, and Ogoja (Trans-Saharan Highway) in Ebonyi State, and crosses Benue, Kogi (spanning River Benue at Bagana), and Nasarawa States, culminating in Apo, Abuja,” he stated.
The infrastructure will include a 1.35 km bridge over the River Benue at Bagana and a 400-meter bridge over the Ebom River, with several smaller bridges, interchanges, and overpasses to ensure seamless travel.
Umahi emphasized the project’s potential to drastically reduce travel time, providing a rapid connection from the South-South and South-East regions to Abuja.
He added that the development of this route would pave the way for the establishment of new cities and spur substantial socio-economic activities along the corridor.
“This road will stimulate the emergence of new cities and infrastructural development along the corridor. It will enhance socio-economic activities, boost development, and connect the Calabar Export Processing Zone to international markets, including the Republic of Cameroon,” he added.
By focusing on these transformative projects, Umahi reiterated Tinubu’s dedication to advancing regional integration, stimulating economic growth, and leaving a lasting mark on Nigeria’s infrastructure legacy.
