Oba Of Benin Hails Gov Okpebholo For Restoring Statutory Rights
The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has lauded Governor Monday Okpebholo for restoring his full statutory rights, describing the move as a significant setback to detractors of the Benin monarchy.
In a letter of appreciation dated November 27, 2024, the Oba also celebrated the abolition of the parallel traditional councils created in Edo South senatorial district under the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The Oba also expressed his belief that Governor Okpebholo’s leadership was divinely ordained to bring order and progress to Edo State, praying for continued strength and wisdom for the governor.
The letter, signed by senior Palace Chiefs, including Norense Ozigbo-Esere (Osuma of Benin), Edionwe Oliha (Oliha of Benin), Stanley Obamwonyi (Esere of Benin), and Osaro Idah (Obazelu of Benin), expressed gratitude for Governor Okpebholo’s swift action in addressing longstanding concerns.
These include revoking the withdrawal of the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre’s concession, which had been a contentious issue under Obaseki’s government.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Oba, Osaigbovo Iguobaro, made the statement public, emphasizing the palace’s appreciation for restoring the Oba’s rights and privileges as the sole traditional ruler of the Benin Kingdom and custodian of its cultural heritage.
The letter partly read: “We deeply thank your Excellency for deeming it fit and necessary to restore the full Statutory Rights of the Oba of Benin, for respecting the rights and privileges of the Omo N’Oba as the only Traditional Ruler of Benin Kingdom in Edo South Senatorial District and custodian of the rich-cultural heritage.
“This action of Your Excellency, which is coming barely two weeks into your administration, is very well applauded. It is devastating on our detractors. It’s joyous to our friends, and marvelous in the eyes of the Almighty God.
“The Omo N’Oba prays for God Almighty to continue to strengthen and guide your Excellency as you continue to bring about a meaningful and robust transformation of Edo State.”
The restoration follows controversies during the previous administration, which had stripped the Oba of his statutory rights and created rival traditional councils in the region’s local government areas.
These actions, coupled with accusations of rebellion by some Enigie (Benin Dukes), had strained relations between the state and the monarchy.
