The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has revealed that the proposed tax reforms by President Bola Tinubu, is not popular among the Governors across the country.

He revealed that the rejection of the tax proposals is not only by the northern governors but cuts across other regions.

Speaking on the controversies surrounding the bills that are currently before the National Assembly, Zulum disclosed that not up to three governors out of the 36 state governors of the federation are in support of the tax reform bills.

“As at now, you cannot get 3 governors in Nigeria that are in support of this Tax law, But what we are saying is okay, you are right, if you want to say that this is a new law, let us have more time to discuss about the law and understand the merits and demerits.

Let us withdraw some of the law, expunge some of the portions,” he said during an interview on Channels TV on Sunday.

Governor Zulum, however, maintained that the grievances are not against the bill in its entirety, but what they want is for the portions that have issues to be looked into and adjusted for the good of everybody.

He pointed out specifically that the bills, as proposed by the President, want the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) scrapped by 2029, arguing that such development would negatively affect tertiary institutions in the country.

The Borno Governor argued that the matter is not about the North as some people want it to appear, but it affects other regions of the country as well.
