Why Southgate Needs To Consider Smalling For World Cup – Mourinho
Jose Mourinho has urged England head coach, Gareth Southgate, to take Chris Smalling into consideration for his World Cup team.
The three lions will compete in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar alongside Wales, Iran, and the United States in the same Group.
The Portuguese coach claimed that Smalling has done enough to earn a spot in the England manager’s squad for Qatar in an interview with Dailymail.
“He was taught to play in a two-man defence in Manchester, but now he’s got the perfect acumen to play in a three-man backline,” he said.
“If I were the coach of a national team, I would do anything to have someone like him at my disposal.”
The former Manchester United defender has 31 caps for England and has scored once. In 10 Serie A games, Smalling has scored three goals.
Mourinho added, “I don’t think it’s a lack of respect to Southgate when I say I feel sorry for a player who’s playing at such a high level like Smalling and who won’t get the opportunity he deserves.”
