Armstrong’s Equalizer Earned Southampton A Hard-Earned Point Against Arsenal
Stuart Armstrong’s first goal for Southampton earned the Saints a point against Arsenal on Sunday at St Mary’s Stadium.
For just the second time this year, the Gunners, who currently sit atop the Premier League standings, have lost points.
Granit Xhaka scored his second goal of the season for the Gunners 11 minutes after the game kicked off, sweeping the ball into the roof of the net after Ben White’s low pass.
Before halftime, the visitors had a chance to double their lead when the vibrant Gabriel Martinelli’s shot was deflected wide and Gabriel Jesus was stopped by Southampton’s goalkeeper, Gavin Bazunu.
Even though the Saints played better in the second half, Jesus had managed to get past the Southampton defence and was only stopped by a brilliant last-ditch challenge from Elyounoussi.
Adam Armstrong and Mohamed Elyounoussi produced a fine build-up which was finished off by Scottish winger, Armstrong to extend Saints’ unbeaten streak to three games.
With two points, Mikel Arteta’s team continues to top the league standings, while Saints remain in 15th place, three points above the relegation zone.
