Buhari Under Pressure To Change Nigerian Constitution, Run For Third Term – Garba Shehu
President Muhammadu Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu on Monday claimed that his principal is under pressure to change the Nigerian Constitution.
According to Shehu, the persuaders are pressuring him to run for a third term in office.
The presidential aide while speaking on Channels TV said, “In fact, from 2019, we have seen persuaders come before our very eyes and tell us that leaders should not go; that term limits are a nuisance and should be eliminated.”
Shehu, however, did not reveal the identity of the persons behind the call and if the president has the support in the National Assembly to push for another term in office.
Speaking on the call for another term, Shehu said President Buhari is eager to leave office in 2023.
He said, “But Buhari wants to make the point that ‘I am not here to stay a day beyond my term of office and be sure there’ll be an election.”
Shehu pointed to the case of former President, Musa Yar’Adua, who took ill for most of his government and ruled while bedridden.
The presidential spokesman said, “We have seen people on death beds unwilling to go, and persuaders are saying ‘no, they will keep power until they go to the grave’”
