Rice’s replacement, Jorginho, was then caught in possession in the build-up to Spurs’ second goal.

According to Sky Sports, Rice had to be taken off after complaining about his calf, having been playing through an issue since pre-season.

The England international was seen still wearing his full kit on the bench during the second half.

He also had his leg strapped up as he sat next to Aaron Ramsdale in the dugout.

Rice was replaced as part of a double substitution for the Gunners at half-time, with Kai Havertz also coming on for Fabio Vieira.

The hosts appeared to be coping well without Rice after Bukayo Saka restored their lead from the penalty spot.

Spurs were level less than a minute later, though, after capitalising on a mistake from Jorginho.

The Italian took too long on the ball as Maddison closed him down before dispossessing him.

Arsenal fans will hope Rice’s calf injury is not serious, with their side facing a busy run of fixtures in the coming weeks.

The Gunners play Brentford in the Carabao Cup and Lens in the Champions League before league matches against Manchester City and Chelsea before the end of October.
