Edo Assembly Confirms Osagie As Okpebholo’s Attorney General

The Edo State House of Assembly has officially confirmed Samson Osagie as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the state.

This comes shortly after Governor Monday Okpebholo appointed Osagie and a few others, including Dr Cyril Oshiomhole, the son of the former State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, for the position of Commissioner for Health, into his cabinet.

Recall that the governor was sworn into office yesterday at a ceremony attended by governors and political leaders in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Okpebholo had in the letter sought additional funds to support the government’s operations.

The assembly members who approved Osagie, who has served two terms in the House and previously represented Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, stated that he was selected due to the critical role of the position in the state’s governance.

The Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, congratulated Osagie, who was a member of the House from 1999 to 2007, on his new role.

Agbebaku mentioned that taking the oath of office is a tradition in the House to honour the contributions of former members.

He also mentioned that the decision on the nomination of Dr Oshiomhole, the other candidate, would be made on Monday, November 18, 2024.

The Clerk of the House, Alhaji Yahaya Omoigba, presented the letter requesting additional funds, which Governor Okpebholo personally signed.

Omoigba explained that the letter was for the amendment of the 2024 supplementary budget, which was previously revised by the governor who served before Godwin Obaseki.

However, the Speaker directed the request to the House standing committee on appropriation.

Agbebaku allocated one week for the committee to prepare and submit its report to the House for approval.
