Hawking Dogs On The Street, Roadside Sale Of Animals Illegal – Lagos Govt

The Lagos State Government has reiterated that hawking dogs and selling any livestock on the street and by the roadside in the state remains illegal.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps would not hesitate to apprehend defaulters.

Wahab stated this on Tuesday in a statement in response to trending videos of some persons hawking puppies in the Lekki axis of the state. He explained that such businesses disrupt public order and pose a significant risk to the public health.

“Street trading and hawking of any goods or animals are prohibited under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017. Individuals engaging in the indiscriminate display and sale of livestock by the roadside are in violation of both environmental and agricultural laws of the state. These actions not only disrupt public order but also pose significant risks to public health.

“The hawking of sickly puppies, for instance, highlights the dangers of such practices. Enforcement on this front falls under the mandate of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (also known as KAI),” he said.

Wahab added that the Lagos State Government remains committed to ensuring compliance with environmental, agricultural, and public health regulations in the state.
