Before the match, Wilson, 32, had a remarkable 7-0 record against the Welsh legend in matches longer than best-of-five.

After beating the three-time world champion at the Northern Ireland Open last month, he admitted to Eurosport: “It’s very flattering because he’s an all-time great.

“I don’t now what it is, maybe his style just suits the way I play. He’s so relaxed out there I think he makes me feel relaxed. I just always enjoy playing Mark.”

But Williams, 49, finally overcame his rival in a 6-5 thriller to seal a spot in the semi-final of the competition, where he will play the winner of Group Three featuring Judd Trump, Ding Junhui, Ali Carter and Neil Robertson.

Speaking after the match, reigning world champion Wilson said: “I didn’t feel I played that well, I was hanging on.

“Mark was the better player – I made far too many unforced errors.

“I felt like crap all week.

“I’m so annoyed with the way I played the red over the pocket in the decider.

“All credit to Mark.”

Williams joked to ITV he had now put Wilson “on his mantlepiece”.

He later told the World Snooker Tour: “I’ve been hitting it quite well when I’ve been having a knock with my coach Lee Walker.

“I can’t really be hitting it much better when I’m practising.

“It doesn’t come out so much on the match table, but a bit of it came out there.

“I played well there and beat him 6-5. He’s one of the best players.

“I lost 10-9 on the black to Judd Trump in Saudi. I’m pushing these top players close.

“I don’t know how I am, but lets see how long it can continue.”
