INEC Drops Abacha’s Son From Kano Governorship Race

The Independent Electoral Commission in Nigeria (INEC) has named Sadik Wali as the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP party in Kano state rescinding its earlier decision about Mohammed Abacha.

This action has already caused confusion among members of the party who are loyal to the state executive led by Shehu Sagagi.

Daily Trust had earlier reported about the crisis that broke out in the PDP party in Kano which resulted in two parallel primary elections. The primaries led to the emergence of the sons of the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Wali, and the late former President General Sani Abacha.

On June 30, the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the state, Professor Riskuwa Shehu, told reporters that the commission had monitored the primary election led by Shehu Wada Sagagi which produced Abacha as the gubernatorial candidate.

But after publishing the names of the governorship candidates across the country on Friday by INEC state offices, Wali’s name and that of his deputy Yusuf Dambatta were seen on the wall of the INEC office in Kano state.

Reacting to the situation, INEC public relations officer in Kano state, Ahmad Adam Maulud, said that the commission at the state level has forwarded the results of the primaries that it has observed to the PDP national headquarters.
