INEC Lists Shekarau As NNPP Senatorial Candidate, Despite Defection To PDP

INEC Lists Shekarau As NNPP Senatorial Candidate, Despite Defection To PDP

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday released the final list of candidates contesting for the national assembly in 2023.

The list released by the electoral body ahead of the campaign season consists of the name, party, educational qualification, and age of each candidate.

A former Governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau who is currently representing the Kano Central senatorial district also made the list.

The list released by INEC shows that Shekarau was listed as the senatorial candidate for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) despite his recent defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Recall that Shekarau had joined PDP after he accused the presidential candidate of NNPP, Rabiu Kwankwaso of betrayal.

Shekarau, while giving his reason for dumping NNPP for PDP, said, “All the agreements we had with him were betrayed by Kwankwaso and his boys and they did not accommodate one single person from my camp.

“We reached an agreement to accommodate my supporters into various elective positions in the party, but until now, the committee set up could not accommodate one single person apart from the senatorial slot given to me.”

Despite his decision to dump the party and forfeit the ticket to support PDP in 2023, Shekarau has been identified as an NNPP senatorial candidate by INEC.
