Liverpool vs Real Madrid preview

The new Champions League format promised big matches, and it’s certainly delivered as Liverpool clash with reigning champions Real Madrid at Anfield.

It’s a massive week for Arne Slot’s side.

Table-topping Liverpool currently hold an eight-point advantage over Manchester City in the Premier League, and could extend that to 11 points when the heavyweights meet on Merseyside later this week.

It’s been a similarly successful start on the European front, too.

The Reds are the only team to have won all four of their games in the 2024-25 Champions League after beating AC Milan, Bologna, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen.

The only previous time they’ve won their first five matches in a major European campaign was in 2021-22.

Liverpool have played 18 competitive matches this season under Slot, and they’ve won 16 of those, but even after such a dominant start to the season – a win over Real Madrid in Europe is rare.

Liverpool won their first three games against Real Madrid in European competition (between 1981 and 2009), however they’re winless in their eight meetings since then, suffering seven defeats (D1).

Carlo Ancelotti’s side arrive in mixed form.

Real Madrid have secured back-to-back wins over Leganes and Osasuna by an aggregate score of 7-0, but they have lost two of their last three Champions League matches, as many as they had in their previous 28 games combined.

They will also be without Vinicius Junior for the encounter after he suffered a hamstring injury over the weekend.

He’s a big loss for Ancelotti, although their record without the Brazilian is still pretty good, winning 12 of their 16 games since the start of last season.

Though still available at around 11/2 and one of the favourites for the Champions League, Real Madrid are sat in 18th in the standings with just six points from four games.

Real Madrid are the only side in La Liga yet to lose on the road this season. In their six matches away from the Bernabeu, Carlo Ancelotti’s men have won three and drawn three, conceding just four times.
