Naija News looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Sunday 23rd October 2022.

The PUNCH: No fewer than 53,418 Nigerians lost their lives to non-state actors between May 29, 2015 and October 15, 2022. The deaths occurred mostly from farmers/herders’ conflict, clashes by religious groups, and attacks by terrorists and bandits.

The Guardian: A little over a year after the passage of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), the sector has remained in crutches, yoking under the weight of gross inefficiencies that have plagued it for several years. Rather than the nation’s major source of revenue improving with the passage of the PIA as envisaged by stakeholders, the industry still lags behind other sectors in terms of GDP contribution and appears to be worsening and heading for total collapse.

This Day: The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has promised to revive the Nigerian economy if elected in 2023, just as his counterpart in the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu promised to move Nigeria to the right direction, particularly the welfare of the people, if elected in 2023.

The Nation: Former Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd) has said the mission of bandits is to re-colonise Nigerians. He warned the country would be reduced to nothing if bandits terrorising the country are not rooted out.

Daily Trust: With over two million Nigerians displaced and more than 600 killed by floods, more people risk economic hardship as the situation bites harder in the country. Haulage services have been severely affected due to inaccessible roads, leaving millions of business owners at risk. This report captures the plight of Nigerians who depend on goods supply chain in the country for their livelihood.
