NSC DG Shehu Dikko Aims To Prevent Another Olympics Failure For Nigeria
The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, believes that collaboration with the private sector, state governments, and organizations such as the International Tennis Academy will prevent Nigeria from failing to win medals at the Olympics.
Recall that before Shehu Dikko was appointed the NSC Chairman, Nigeria finished the 2024 Paris Olympics without winning any medals.
During the Sapetro Futures Tournament held at the Ikoyi Club over the weekend, Shehu Dikko expressed confidence that partnering with states will enable the identification of exceptional talent across various sports, beginning as early as age 10.
“With the collaboration of all stakeholders, I believe we can ensure that Nigeria will no longer return from the Olympic Games without medals,” he stated.
The Sapetro Futures Championship showcased singles competitions across three age categories: Boys and Girls 12s, 14s, and 16s. The skill and tactical prowess displayed by the finalists impressed attendees at the event.
Bayelsa State triumphed in the Boys and Girls 12s divisions, with Excellency Oginiba emerging victorious over Oyo State’s Ghazal Ashim, and Karina Opuene defeating Barakat Ganiyu, also from Oyo State, in a thrilling match that went to three 10-point tiebreak sets.
Lagos’ rising star, Mofi Atilola, stood out in the junior tournament by securing the 12 and under title. She showcased exceptional talent by competing in the 14s and 16s categories, reaching the finals in both. Mofi claimed victory against Success Godwin from Ekiti in straight sets in the 14s but narrowly lost to Goodnews Aina, also from Ekiti, in the Girls 16s final by the same score.
The Boys 16s championship was won by Gbolahan Olawale from Ondo State, who defeated Onyekachi Ogumjiofor from Oyo State in the final. Isa Yahaya from Lagos clinched the Boys 14s title with a decisive two-set victory over Goodluck Tersoo from Abuja, who had previously won the 14s title in their prior encounter.
