Reps Begin Process To Remove CCT Chairman Danladi Umar Over Alleged Misconduct
The House of Representatives has initiated steps to finalize the removal of the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar, citing allegations of misconduct.
A motion sponsored by the Majority Leader of the House, Julius Ihonvbere, seeking Umar’s dismissal, was listed on the Order Paper for Tuesday’s plenary session.
The motion referenced Section 17(3) of the Fifth Schedule of the 1999 Constitution, which outlines the procedure for removing the CCT chairman.
This comes shortly after the Senate passed a resolution for Umar’s removal last week, citing Section 157 of the Constitution.
However, senior legal experts criticized the Senate’s approach, noting that the appropriate legal framework for such action is Section 17(3) of the Fifth Schedule.
Danladi Umar has been embroiled in controversies during his tenure, with critics questioning his conduct and decisions at the tribunal.
Ihonvbere on Tuesday said, “By virtue of the provisions of Section 17 (3), PT 1, Fifth Schedule of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and Section 22(3) of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act Cap C15 LFN 2004, Mr. President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces is mandated to act on an address supported by a two-thirds majority of the Senate and House of Representatives and praying that the Chairman be so removed for misconduct.”
