Senate Passes Bill To Formalize Nigerian Police Training Institutions
The Nigerian Senate has approved a bill designed to provide a legal framework for establishing training institutions for the Nigerian Police Force.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the bill was passed after the Committee on Police Affairs presented its report during Wednesday’s plenary session.
Senator Abdulhamid Ahmed (APC-Jigawa), chairman of the committee, presented the report, emphasizing that the bill’s approval would significantly enhance the operational efficiency of police training centres.
He highlighted that this step would equip police personnel with the skills needed to deliver improved results and fulfill their constitutional duties more effectively.
Ahmed lamented the current state of many police training institutions, pointing out their lack of legal backing and insufficient funding.
He noted that years of neglect had left some of these centres in poor condition, undermining their ability to function optimally.
The lawmaker further explained that the bill aims to transform these institutions into advanced hubs for professional training and other essential functions.
Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP-Bauchi) also supported the bill, noting its importance in strengthening the police force’s operations and ensuring its sustainability.
He stressed the need for competent personnel to manage the force, adding that the bill would provide the necessary training framework to achieve this objective.
