Spain-born Williams Switches Allegiance To Ghana

Athletic Bilbao’s Inaki Williams has announced his intention to switch his international allegiance to Ghana.

The 28-year-old was born in Spain to parents who reached a refugee camp in Ghana after saying they fled the civil war in Liberia and then moved to the Basque Country region.

In a video posted on his social media accounts on Tuesday, Williams said the time has come for him to find his origins within himself and with Africa and Ghana.

He wrote: “Every step we take forward has its own meaning. An evolution. A glance into the future leaves a trace itself. A legacy. My parents have raised me with values based on humility, respect and love.

“They have taught me to embrace life. In that constant quest to continue growing and working upon the pursuit of evolving personally and professionally as an individual.

“That’s why I feel the moment has come for me to find my origins within myself and with Africa and Ghana which means so much to me and my family.

“I want to return a small part of everything it has given to us because Ghana has played a significant part of becoming who I am as a person, as a son and as a brother.

“Today a new challenge begins. From now on, I will defend Ghana’s t-shirt with all my will whilst I give my best. I’m one of the Black Stars.”

Williams is one of five players to switch allegiance to Ghana ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.

The striker was a member of Spain’s youth squads and made one appearance with the main team in a friendly against Bosnia in 2016.

He had not been called up recently by current Spain coach Luis Enrique. Ghana is in Group H of this year’s World Cup in Qatar, along with Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.
