Jan Vertonghen’s own goal split the sides and saw Belgium bail out with more international heartache.

And captain De Bruyne did not take kindly to a question over the “golden generation” of players who failed to win a major tournament.

The Manchester City star said: “And you say that France and England and Spain and Germany is not a golden generation? OK, thank you.”

De Bruyne, 33, then walks off and mutters “stupid”.

The midfielder came under fire after telling his team-mates not to acknowledge disgruntled Belgium fans following a 0-0 draw to Ukraine.

De Bruyne’s Etihad future was also thrown into doubt before Belgium’s crunch knockout game.

It emerged that the former Chelsea man had spoken to Saudi Pro League director Michael Emenalo – before later committing himself to City.

He said: “Yes. [I’ll stay at City]. I’ve read a lot of headlines about a transfer, but I haven’t spoken to anyone.

“I saw him [Emenalo] at the Club World Cup. I know Michael, so it makes sense for us to have a chat. But it wasn’t about that.”

De Bruyne has now just 12 months left on the City contract he signed in April 2021.

Asked on his next move after City, he replied: “It’s hard to say now. We will be sitting around the table in the coming months.”
