West Ham vs Chelsea preview

An intriguing encounter awaits at the London Stadium as lacklustre West Ham entertain rivals Chelsea in Saturday’s lunchtime kick off.

And for once, Enzo Maresca isn’t the manager under the microscope.

That dubious honour goes to Hammers boss Julen Lopetegui, who’s picked up just four points in the opening four matches of his West Ham tenure.

The London side picked up their one and only win against Crystal Palace, but have been beaten by Aston Villa and Manchester City.

They looked to be heading for another defeat before Danny Ings netted a dramatic 95th-minute equaliser to snatch a point at Fulham last time out.

Though the fixtures haven’t exactly been straightforward, fans were expecting a big season following the summer’s £140million spending spree on the likes of Max Kilman, Crysencio Summerville and Niclas Fullkrug.

West Ham have lost both of their Premier League home games so far this season – in their league history, they’ve never lost each of their first three at home in a single campaign.

As for Chelsea, things are a little more optimistic after last week’s feisty 1-0 win at Bournemouth.

The Blues are eighth in the division with seven points from a possible 12, and actually appear to enjoy playing away from Stamford Bridge having won each of their last four away games in the top flight.

Chelsea have won 30 of their 56 Premier League meetings with West Ham (D10 L16), only winning more times against Tottenham in the competition’s history (35).

West Ham have managed precious few clean sheets in the Premier League recently, so there’s good reason to believe that Chelsea can score a couple on Saturday afternoon.

The Hammers have managed just one shut out in their last 20 top-flight matches stretching back to last season, while they’ve also faced more shots than any other side across the opening four Premier League games this season.

Only Ipswich Town, Everton and Southampton have a higher xGC (expected goals conceded) this season, while Chelsea’s xG (expected goals) ranks as the eighth best in the division.

They are still more than capable of scoring goals with their abundance of attacking talent, but it’s not really clicked thus far and they’ve only scored 2+ goals twice in their last nine.
