Who is Dame Sarah Storey’s Paralympic gold medalist husband Richard?
Richard is a sighted pilot, who races with visually-impaired tandem track cyclists at the Paralympics.
The cyclist is often referred to as “Barney” by fans, since his middle name is Barnaby.
He is married to Sarah Storey, a Paralympic gold medallist who competes in cycling and swimming events.
Sarah is a 29-time world champion and has appeared at every Paralympics since 1992.
Richard met Sarah in 2007 and the couple now live in Cheshire, with their daughter Daisy.
What is Richard ‘Barney’ Storey’s disability?
Richard was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was four.
Type 1 diabetes, also referred to as juvenile diabetes, is an autoimmune disease where beta cells (which make insulin) are destroyed by the immune system.
As a sighted pilot, it is Richard’s job to guide his teammate during tandem races.
When did Richard ‘Barney’ Storey compete in the Paralympics?
Richard competed in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Paralympics.
He won his first gold at the 2008 games in Beijing and went on to win another for Britain at the 2012 Games.
After he competed at the Beijing Games, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2009 New Year Honours “for services to disabled sport”.
