The political landscape of Rivers State has been marred by a series of violent incidents and arson, primarily stemming from the ongoing rift between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike and the Governor of the state, Siminalayi Fubara.
This power struggle has not only created a tense political atmosphere but has also led to the destruction of property and raised concerns about the safety of residents in the state.
In this article, Naija News lists incidents that have seen structures in the state bombed or set on fire due to the political differences between the current and the former governor of Rivers State.
– The Rivers State House of Assembly, on the 30th of October, 2023 night, was rocked by an explosion, amid plan by some lawmakers to impeach the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, at the time.
– On June 25, 2024, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was detonated near Hotel Presidential in the heart of Port Harcourt, the state’s capital, during a protest allegedly led by political associates of the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike.
– On the 12th of August, 2024, a dynamite explosion rocked the secretariat of the Action Peoples Party along the GRA axis of Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital
– Naija News reported that on the 5th of October, 2024, there was an explosion at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Secretariat on Aba Road at approximately 3:00 AM.
– Also on the same date, another explosion occurred at the Obio/Akpor Council secretariat around 3:30 AM.
– On the 7th of October, 2024, the Ikwerre Local Government Secretariat in Rivers State was set on fire by suspected thugs, hours after Chairmen of the Local Government Areas in the state were sworn in.
– Political thugs, on Monday 7th, 2024, a part of the Eleme Local Government Area secretariat was set ablaze shortly after newly elected Chairman, Brian Gokpa arrived with his councillors and supporters.
